The flying books are mainly a study in how strange books can look when hung up instead of being put in a
shelf. But then - since they only have blank pages, and most of them can't be turned: are they books at all?
This installations is meant to initiate the question in the viewer that is pushing me about
every day: what is a book?
And then the pink salt dough covers suddenly appear almost organic whith a grainy structure almost like
pores, and together with the feathers they suddenly look like odd birds, ready to fly away.
"Flying books" is the name of an installation (mobile) which includes 16 books.
Most of them (with 1 exception) are bound in coptic style. The pages are folded comparable
to a style used for altering books. But in this case, as the book's pages were intended to be
folded, they match in their folded dimension the size of the covers.
The covers themselves are made from salt dough, which was partially colored with beet juice.
The paper used for the pages varies, some pages are rag paper, others drawing paper, printing
paper or even regular office supply paper.
Other materials are: cotton tape, feathers, linen thread, wooden rods.
